“Russia is trying to steal Ukrainian territory, this is the most brutal violation of the United Nations Charter,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said at the UN Security Council. He called for the complete isolation of Russia, the removal of its voting rights in the United Nations and the imposition of global sanctions on it.
This is an attempt to steal the territory of another state. It is an attempt to erase the norms of international law. This is a very cynical attempt to incorporate the male population in the occupied territories of Ukraine into the Russian army to send them to fight against their own homeland Zelenskiy said during a debate in the Security Council devoted to Russian pseudo-referenda in the occupied areas of Ukraine’s four oblasts.
Zelensky called for complete isolation of Russia, removal of its voting rights in the United Nations, its exclusion or suspension in all international organizations, the imposition of global sanctions against Moscow, and the granting of security guarantees to Ukraine.
Any annexation in the modern world is a crime against all states that consider the inviolability of borders to be a key Zelenskiy said, adding that in the current war Ukraine is defending not only its independence but also international law, and therefore “it must receive all necessary financial and military aid for the aggressor to lose”.
Annexation is a kind of movement that pits (Putin) himself against all mankind. Every country in the world needs such a clear signal – he pointed out.
The Ukrainian president also accused Russia of nuclear blackmail and genocidal policy, pointing to the disproportionate number of military calls among indigenous people, including Caucasus and Siberia, as well as among the Crimean Tatars.
The pseudo-referenda organized by Russia also condemned, inter alia, US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who announced that a draft resolution condemning Russia would be put to a vote. If Moscow is not condemned, she said, it would enable it to commit further abuses.
The UN Undersecretary General Rosemary DiCarlo also spoke about the “referenda”, noting that they did not reflect the will of the Ukrainians. She noted that representatives of the Russian occupation authorities, accompanied by soldiers, went from house to house, collecting votes.
