World Cup 2022: surprising appointments in the English squad. Southgate is passionate about the Premier League
Fikayo Tomori’s absence seems to be the biggest surprise for the England squad. Southgate has long ignored the Chelsea London alumnus who, after his transfer to AC Milan, became the team’s leader and helped him win the Italian championship. However, he appointed him for the last two training camps, but the 24-year-old apparently did not convince the coach enough to go to Qatar.
No appointment for Tomori would not be so much of a surprise if not for the fact that Harry Maguire was elected in his place. The seasoned Manchester United defender has been a laughing stock among England fans for a long time, and has only played four games in the Premier League this season.
Just as Southgate chose an unremarkable Premier League defender at the expense of a Serie A top stopper, so it ignored Tammy Abraham as well. Although the Roma forward this season is not in as great shape as in the previous season, he could still hope to go to Qatar.
The England coach this time also omitted a player who until recently seemed to be an important figure of the English. Jadon Sancho, after leaving Borussia, Dortmund became a shadow of his former self. Manchester United paid 85 million euros for him, and so far it seems like a waste of money.
The nomination for James Maddison can be considered in the category of surprises. The Leicester City midfielder has only played one game for England so far, three years ago against Montenegro. Now, however, he is in great shape, even though his team is failing in the Premier League. However, Southgate appreciated the 25-year-old and sent him a calling.
The World Cup in Qatar will start on November 20 and will run until December 18. In the group stage, the English will face Iran (November 21), the United States (November 25) and Wales (November 29).
