Who is behind the attack on the Nord Stream? “I don’t expect them to be Americans. Everything points to Russia.”

“The explosions, as we look at the map, took place near the border of Denmark’s territorial waters. It was a signal for the whole of NATO. Not in the territorial waters of a member state, so if we assume a scenario that it is a sabotage and – to put it bluntly – a sabotage carried out by the Russians, it is rather a signal for the entire NATO and a warning that we (the Russians – RMF FM) may not only escalate the energy crisis, but also find an excuse to escalate military tensions, ”said Dr. Wojciech Lorenz from the Polish Institute of International Affairs about the damage to the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in an afternoon interview at RMF FM.

When asked whether, in connection with recent events, Poland should strengthen the protection of the Baltic Pipe, he replied: We do need to defend critical infrastructure. Poland is increasingly dependent on energy supplies by sea from the Baltic Sea. We just need to be able to detect, monitor and counter threats.

Asked whether we are actually able to do this, the analyst pointed out that Poland is investing in the navy. Limited for now, but we have such basic abilities – he said.

Fortunately, we are a member of the North Atlantic Alliance. We have allies who also have capabilities in the Baltic Sea. We have Sweden, which has submarines, and which will hopefully soon become a NATO member. We can exchange intelligence information, we can jointly conduct activities that will strengthen the security of critical infrastructure – added.

Tomasz Terlikowski on RMF FM also asked about Joe Biden’s statement on Nord Stream 2. The American president said that after Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the pipeline would not work. As for Biden’s statements, they referred to the US ability to put pressure on Germany not to launch Nord Stream 2. Of course, these statements can be expected to reveal various conspiracy theories. But we must also be aware that there are very serious capabilities to monitor the security of critical infrastructure. Perhaps the perpetrators will be found and I do not expect them to be Americans (…) In my opinion, everything points to Russia – he pointed out.
