– We came here [do San Antonio w USA – red.] With Afghanistan in search of a happy, safe life. But that didn’t happen, the missing girl’s father, Riaz Sardar Khil, tells The New York Times. The rope was last seen at the playground next to her house, where she was playing with a group of 12 children. Her mother let her out of sight for several minutes.

The missing Lina Sardar

“Nobody goes into thin air, and neither did Lina,” William McManus, the local police chief, told The New York Times, adding, “I never give up.”

However, although nine months have passed since December 20, 2021, investigators still do not know what happened then.

Lina’s brother calls out her name every time he notices a girl who looks like his sister. The mother of a four-year-old closed most of her clothes, shoes and accessories in a plastic container. He hopes to have a reason to open it someday. He often dreams of his daughter. “But when I open my eyes, she’s gone,” he says.

In an interview with the New York Times, Lina’s parents told the story of the tragic day. Her mother, Zarmeena Sardar Khil, remembers watching a little girl leaving the house, wearing a winter jacket, a red dress, and black shoes. She had a great view of the playground where Lina played with her peers from the window. She turned away from him for just a few minutes. When she looked again, the girl was gone.

Zarmenna remembers fear rushing through her body, and time seemed to stand still as she stared at her child’s face among the playing children. The woman began repeating in her mind that Lina must be around somewhere. She tried not to panic. It is not unusual for children from the Afghan community to enter a family friend’s home for a glass of water or to use the toilet.

In the next 30 minutes, the woman visited the homes of all befriended neighbors. But the girl was nowhere to be found. The desperate mother started screaming her daughter’s name in the hope that she would appear soon. It did not happen. So Zarmenna called her husband and told him that their Lina was missing.

The father of the four-year-old found Zarmenna in a state of complete shock. He called a local Afghan community leader for help. The latter ordered the man to inform the local police. More than an hour has passed since Lina’s disappearance.

That evening, officers searched the entire estate. All the cars leaving it were checked. They even looked into the garbage cans. Tracking dogs were also brought to the site. Members of the FBI and a team of divers called by them, who were looking for Lina in a nearby creek, also assisted in the search. The girl was not found.

A few days after the disappearance of Lina Sardar, volunteers joined the search campaign, including Pamela Allen – founder of the Eagles Flight Advocacy & Outreach organization, which helps immigrants in crisis matters. Dozens of volunteers searched the vicinity of the Sardar home for any clue.

“I was devastated because we didn’t find any clue, but at the same time I was relieved that we didn’t find the body either,” Pamela Allen told The NY Times.

More than nine months have passed since then. The search for Lina continues. For providing information that will lead to the finding of the girl, the Crime Stoppers of San Antonio association offers 50,000. dollars (equivalent to PLN 246 500). In turn, the non-profit organization Islamic Center of San Antonio announced that it will donate a prize of 200,000. dollars (the equivalent of PLN 986 thousand) to anyone who provides information about the whereabouts of the girl.

“We will continue to follow every clue, even the smallest one, until Lina is found,” reads an excerpt from a statement posted on the official San Antonio Police website.

The story of Lina Sardar Khil

In Afghanistan, Lina’s father, Riaz Sardar Khil, served in the military. For six years (2013-2019) he cooperated with American soldiers in the Khost province, located in the south of the country. For his services to the United States, he was granted a special visa that allowed him to settle with his family in San Antonio. There, the Sardars were to start a new life.

Three-year-old Lina barely survived while visiting Afghanistan

In the summer of 2021, the family traveled to Afghanistan. It was there, at the airport in Kabul, that three-year-old Lina barely escaped death. A suicide bomber nearby detonated a bomb. The explosion killed 13 American soldiers and hundreds of Afghans.

In an interview with the New York Times, the girl’s mother remembers the moment she found Lina lying unconscious on the ground. After a while, however, the girl regained consciousness and opened her eyes. The family managed to safely return to the USA.
