USA – migration crisis. Republican governors from Texas and Florida send migrants to Democratic-ruled cities

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis directed two immigrant planes to Martha’s Vineyard Island in Massachusetts. Hours later, buses, dispatched by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, left the migrants near Vice President Kamala Harris’s official Washington residence. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said Republican governors use migrants as “political pawns.”

CNN reported that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis justified his actions with the support of the Massachusetts state authorities for illegally entering USA migrants. “States such as Massachusetts, New York and California will facilitate better care for those they have invited to our country by encouraging illegal immigration by (…) supporting the Biden administration’s open border policy,” says DeSantis’ office, which is mentioned as a potential presidential candidate.

Florida planes landed at Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday night. About 50 immigrants in total came there. The Reuters agency stressed that details of how the flights were arranged and paid remain unclear. One local airport employee said most of the migrants are Venezuelans.

“We are a community that comes together to support immigrants”

As CBS News reported, the DeSantis office did not consider the legal status of immigrants. She stressed that many of the people crossing from the site Mexico the border is illegally temporarily protected against deportation and can apply for asylum.

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker’s press secretary reported that the state executive was in contact with local officials regarding the arrival of migrants. “Local officials provide short-term shelter and the administration will continue to support these efforts,” the press secretary stressed.

State House of Representatives legislator Dylan Fernandes of Martha’s Vineyard tweeted that the local community had joined in helping the newcomers.

“Our island has stepped into action with 50 beds, giving everyone a good meal, providing a playground for children, making sure people have the health care and support they need. We are a community that comes together to support immigrants,” wrote Fernandes.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott began sending migrants by bus to other states in April. He initiated it with transport to Washington, and then to New York and Chicago.

A similar incident occurred on Thursday when two buses carrying migrants, sent by Abbott, left the migrants near Vice President Kamala Harris’s official residence in Washington.

White House on treating people as pawns by Republican governors

The actions of the republican governors have been criticized. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said Republican governors use migrants as “political pawns.”

“History does not favor leaders who treat human beings as cargo. They ship them a thousand miles away, let alone tell them where they are going,” commented Massachusetts Democrat Bill Keating.

Several Democrats called for an investigation into the matter. Massachusetts Attorney Rachael Rollins said at a press conference that her office would “be looking into the case” and discuss it with the Justice Department.
