Most of the recruited units are young people from the countryside, kidnapped by structures subordinate to the leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. They are forced to sign contracts with the military by torture or criminal liability on the basis of fabricated charges.
Kidnapping young Chechens in order to send them to war causes a wave of discontent among the inhabitants of the republic, who are outraged that Kadyrov is sending Muslims to someone else’s war of two Christian nations. “In their opinion, this is a betrayal of Muslims,” says HUR.
Ukrainian intelligence also reports that the Russian authorities are carrying out agitation and recruiting for war among citizens of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan residing in Russia. This phenomenon is particularly intense in Moscow and its vicinity, where many people from these countries work. The authorities tempt Asian migrants with high wages and the granting of Russian citizenship.
The Uzbek authorities issued a communiqué on August 10, in which they inform citizens that joining the ranks of the Russian army in order to fight Ukraine is punishable by 10 years’ imprisonment.
