Ukraine – Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant. Enerhoatom: power plant operation stopped

The Ukrainian concern Enerhoatom announced that the operation of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine, controlled by Russian forces, has been stopped. As it was added, as part of safety measures, the last operating block of the power plant was disconnected from the electricity grid at night.

“Today, on September 11, 2022, at night, at 3.41 am, unit VI of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant was disconnected from the electricity grid. Preparations are underway for its cooling down and bringing it into a cold state” – reads the release.

The company that manages Ukrainian nuclear power plants noted that in the last days, Unit 6 produced only energy for the needs of the power plant. It was the last block in operation at the power plant.

As it was added, all lines connecting the facility with the power grid were damaged in the Russian shelling Ukraine. On Saturday evening, after restoring the operation of one of these lines, it became possible for the power plant to obtain energy for its own needs from the Ukrainian grid. “So a decision was made to shut down the VI power unit and put it in the safest state – cold shutdown” – emphasized.

As Enerhoatom added, in the event of a repeated failure of the lines connecting the power plant to the Ukrainian power grid – the risk of which is assessed to be high – the plant will use diesel generators. The company said it was taking steps to deliver additional fuel to the facility.

“In order to prevent an emergency situation in the power plant, it is necessary to stop the racist (Russian) shelling of the lines connecting the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant with the (Ukrainian) network and to create a demilitarized zone around the (facility) – it was written.

“Later, the power lines can be repaired, it will be possible to guarantee the inclusion and continued safe operation of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant” – concluded.

Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant

Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. After the invasion started on February 24 Russia in Ukraine, the facility was seized by the aggressor in early March.

About 500 Russian soldiers are stationed on the site of the power plant. In August, the invaders’ troops fired on the gym several times, creating the risk of releasing radioactive substances. Moscow has always accused Kyiv of these incidents.

In the south and east of the country, the Ukrainian armed forces are leading an increasingly faster offensive. The American Institute for War Studies (ISW) on September 11 published a map of the progress of the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the east of the country. The experts marked with blue color the areas liberated within five days. As emphasized by the think tank – this is more territory than the Russians have been able to occupy since April.
