Ukraine. The Russians announced their retreat from Kherson. Defense Minister of Ukraine: Russian soldiers are still stationed in the city
There are still about 40,000 Russian soldiers in the Kherson region. Their withdrawal will take a minimum of a week, said Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksiej Reznikov. According to the Ukrainian general staff, the Russians are building defenses on the eastern bank of the Dnieper in the Kherson Oblast, as well as in the Zaporizhia Oblast.
Oleksiy Reznikov, quoted by the Reuters agency, said that around 40,000 Russian soldiers are still stationed in the Kherson region. Forces Russia they continue to occupy positions in and around Kherson and in areas on the right (west) bank of the Dnieper. “It is not easy to withdraw these troops from Kherson in a day or two. It will take a minimum of a week, he said, noting that it is difficult to predict the further actions of the Russians, however.
In the opinion of the Ukrainian minister, the withdrawal of Russian soldiers from the Kherson region would allow both sides of the conflict to divert their forces to other directions. In the coming months, however, the pace of military action is likely to slow down in the winter. This will be able to be used (via Ukraine and Russia) to rebuild combat capabilities, he stressed.
Reznikov added that Ukraine currently has a million soldiers of various formations who guard the “hostile” border with 2.5 thousand kilometers BelarusRussia and the occupied territories.
Reznikov: blowing up the dam threatens Russian troops
Reznikov downplayed the possibility of a Russian nuclear attack, and rejected the “crazy” idea that Moscow could decide to blow up the dam in Novaya Kakhovka. He explained that such actions would flood Russian-controlled territories, as well as prevent the supply of fresh water from the Dnieper to the Crimea.
– If we pay attention to the terrain, we will see that the western bank of the Dnieper is higher than the eastern one. This means that the water would flow on the eastern side, which would be a threat to the forces [wroga – red.] – explained the representative of the Ukrainian government.
On October 20, Mykhailo Podolak from the office of the President of Ukraine alerted that Russia was preparing a dangerous provocation at the Kakhov hydroelectric power plant on the Dnieper by mining the dam and transformers. Authorities in Kiev have warned that if Russian forces destroy this dam, more than 80 localities, including the city of Kherson, could be in the flood zone. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called for an international observation mission to be sent to the Kakhov power plant.
The Russians are strengthening on the eastern bank of the Dnieper
Meanwhile, according to the Ukrainian general staff, the Russians are building defenses on the eastern bank of the Dnieper in the Kherson Oblast, as well as in the Zaporizhia Oblast.
The General Staff also quotes the words of the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, General Valery Załużny, about the liberation of six towns in the Kherson Oblast in the direction of Petropavliwka-Noworajsk and another six in the Perwomajske-Kherson section over the past 24 hours.
“The occupiers are very afraid of the partisans”
Loyal to Kiev, the head of the city administration, Kherson Halyna Luhova, said on Thursday that “the occupiers are very afraid of the partisans.” – So much so that they are afraid to go to sleep. The resistance movement is very active in Kherson, especially the famous Yellow Ribbon (organization). The guerrillas make residents understand that they see everyone, including traitors, said Luhowa, quoted by UNIAN.
As she added, the aggressors are constantly looking for people who can cooperate with the Ukrainian army. – An old woman always traded dill and parsley at the same time and in the same place. The invaders came and started shaking her. They asked why he was standing there every day, because he was probably watching something and reporting (later) to Ukrainian troops. Later, no one saw the old woman there anymore. (The Russians) see a partisan in everyone – reported the head of the city authorities.
Shoygu gave the order to retreat from Kherson
Kherson, most of the Kherson region and the southern part of the neighboring Zaporizhia region have been under Russian occupation since the beginning of March. At the end of September, illegal referenda were held in these areas, as well as in the enemy-occupied territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in eastern Ukraine, sanctioning the annexation of the conquered territories to Russia. The Kremlin’s decision has not been recognized by most countries in the world, including all EU and NATO member states.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive continues in the Kherson region. On Thursday, the commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, General Valery Zaluzhny, announced that 41 towns in the Kherson Oblast previously occupied by Russian troops had been liberated from October 1. Only in the last 24 hours, the enemy was forced to leave 12 villages in this region.
Russia’s Defense Minister on Wednesday Sergei Shoigu ordered the withdrawal of the aggressor’s forces to the left (eastern) bank of the Dnieper. This decision was made after a report by General Sergei Surovikin, the commander-in-chief of Russian units in Ukraine. The civil and military authorities in Kiev have not confirmed the opponent’s retreat, stressing that the enemy’s troops are still in Kherson, and the Kremlin’s intentions are not clear and that extreme caution should be exercised in relation to them.
In recent weeks, the Russian occupation administration ordered the evacuation of civilians from Kherson and the surrounding towns.
