Ukraine. Russia announces its retreat from Kherson. Expert: The strategy of exhausting Russian forces has paid off
Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu ordered the withdrawal of Russian forces from the west bank of the Dnieper near Kherson on Wednesday. According to Oleksandr Musijenko, head of the Kiev Center for Military and Legal Research, this decision is related to Russian logistics problems, which make the Russians no longer able to resist the attacks of the Ukrainian army. However, Kyiv warns that the opponent’s retreat from the Kherson region cannot be confirmed so far.
– The Ukrainian strategy of exhausting Russian forces on the right bank of the Dnieper has brought results. The Russians were forced to withdraw because they could not hold defense, mainly due to supply problems. On the other hand, they were under constant fire from the Ukrainian army, explained Oleksandr Musijenko.
The expert noted that the Russian troops had problems not only with the supply of ammunition and food for soldiers. – They have to save their artillery and other weapons, because they have big problems with it. Mobilization helped them fill the gaps in people, but they cannot make up for the losses in equipment so quickly, and they record large losses in tanks and cars – he said.
In his opinion, if the departure of the Russians from the right bank of the Dnieper in Kherson is confirmed, it will strengthen the front positions Ukraine. – Ukraine will regain all areas on the right bank of the Dnieper, and Russian troops will not be able to develop offensive operations against Mykolaiv and Odessa he explained.
At the same time, he emphasized that regaining Kherson would be symbolic for Ukraine. – We are regaining the only peripheral city that the Russians managed to capture – he stressed.
Musijenko expects Ukrainian troops to enter Kherson as soon as possible. – It will depend on how quickly the Ukrainian troops check the situation in terms of security, if there are no traps, min. I think it will be very careful – he said.
– Unfortunately, in Kherson we can see what we have seen in many cities and villages that were and still are under Russian occupation. It is possible that we will see mass graves, as we saw in Bucza, Izium or Mariupol – he said in an interview with PAP.
Shoigu gave the order to retreat
Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu on Wednesday, he ordered to withdraw to the left (eastern) bank of the Dnieper after a report by Sergei Surovikin, commander-in-chief of the Russian forces in Ukraine. Surovikin said that Kherson and the surrounding towns “cannot be fully supplied and cannot function, and people’s lives are in constant danger.”
Mykhailo Podolak, advisor to the president of Ukraine, said, however, that it was too early to speak of a Russian withdrawal from occupied Kherson. “As long as the Ukrainian flag is not waving in Kherson, there is no point in talking about the withdrawal of Russian forces from the city,” he said.
