Ukraine. More than nine thousand children were deported to Russia. Findings of Ukrainian investigators
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said on Monday that, according to investigators, the Russians had deported up to 9,400 children from Ukrainian territory. However, he noted that the real number may be higher. Kostin also assessed that “such facts are a war crime and an element of genocide.”
– Currently, during the investigation it has been established that 9400 children were deported by Russia from the territory Ukraine. We are aware that there may be many more children who have fallen victim to these crimes, Kostin said in an interview with Interfax Ukraine. He added that the prosecutor’s office checks all the information that reaches it in this case. – When examining these cases, especially when collecting evidence, we rely on the fact that such facts are both a war crime and an element of genocide – said the prosecutor.
He recalled that, according to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the forced transfer of children from one national group to another in order to destroy the former is a crime of genocide.
As at the beginning of October, the Ukrainian authorities had data from nearly 8,000. children deported to Russia or to the so-called people’s republics in Donbas. The real number of children taken out is probably higher.
During the invasion of Ukraine, the Russians illegally deport children from orphanages and boarding houses, as well as children who lost relatives or contact with their families during the war. Some children in Russia are put up for adoption. The Russians themselves admit that they are taking children out of Ukraine, even giving much higher numbers – up to 600,000. The Ukrainian side, not receiving any data from Russia, cannot verify this information.
