Ukraine. ISW on Russia’s reactions to Western arms deliveries and the lack of reflection of “red lines”

“The Kremlin reacts selectively to Western supplies,” the American Institute for War Research (ISW) assessed in the latest report. According to experts, this means that Russia’s statements and threats regarding the transfer of arms to Ukraine serve only information campaigns and do not reflect the existence of “red lines” or specific concerns of Moscow.

The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) pointed out that the Kremlin-controlled information space practically did not react to the announcement by the White House nearly three billion dollars worth of a new aid package for Ukraine. “This once again confirms that the Kremlin and the Russian news sphere selectively portray Western military aid as escalation,” the think tank said in the analysis.

The Russian authorities and the media associated with them basically passed over the latest American package in silence, although the announcement of the delivery of purely defensive, as pointed out by the ISW, Patriot systems was called in Russia “escalation”.

“The Kremlin reacts selectively to Western deliveries to support information campaigns showing Ukraine as a country deprived of sovereignty and aimed at undermining Western readiness for further support by raising fears of escalation.

ISW: Kremlin’s actions do not reflect specific “red lines”

According to ISW, Moscow will also use future deliveries for similar activities, which are part of its information operations. According to the Institute, the Kremlin’s actions serve to strengthen the Russian message and do not reflect specific “red lines” or concerns about the threat of certain types of weapons.

“The ISW has previously indicated that these observations are noteworthy in the context of discussions in the West regarding the supply of Western tanks, long-range missile systems and other weapons to Ukraine,” the report reads.

The think tank noted that representatives of the Russian authorities and the so-called military bloggers, as a rule, negatively assessed the announcement by Vladimir Putin a temporary “ceasefire” over Orthodox Christmas, although there have also been voices – for example Dmitry Medvedev – “promoting the vision of Putin as a defender of religious values and morality.”

On the platforms of influential military bloggers, calls for the “uprooting of Ukrainian cultural and ethnic identity” continue, the ISW wrote.

The center noted that, according to Russian sources, the aggressor’s forces achieved some success in the area of Soledar northeast of Bakhmut. The attacks on Soledar are part of the operation in the Bakhmut area to capture the city.
