Originally, the blue stamp was reserved only for verified accounts of politicians, actors and other important personalities. In recent days social networking site however it did the possibility of purchasing such an emblem for all users after paying $ 8. This triggered an avalanche of fake accounts that pretended to be well-known brands and were marked as “verified”.

According to Reuters, companies such as Nestle, Eli Lilly, BP or Elon Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX fell victim to the new rules on Twitter.

Drug maker Eli Lilly had to apologize to customers after a fake account said the insulin would be free.

“Musk said that Twitter users engaging in spoofing without explicitly identifying it as a satirical account will be permanently suspended without warning“- Reuters reported.

The agency reported that many users report that the option to sign up for a paid subscription to obtain a blue badge is no longer available. Twitter did not respond to a request for comment on this matter.
