The series presents images from the life of the Ottoman court during the reign of the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (the longest reigning Ottoman sultan). One of the main plots in the film is the Sultan’s love for Roksolana (Hürrem).

As we read on the TVP website, the series presents a picture of 16th-century Turkey in its greatest glory. Suleiman began his reign at the age of 26 and ruled for nearly half a century, in the years 1520 – 1566. He was the longest reigning ruler of the Ottoman Empire. He turned out to be not only an outstanding commander, but also a true Renaissance man, he wrote poetry, knew several foreign languages, and was interested in art. He ruled an empire that spanned three continents, conquered Hungary in Europe, conquered Iraq in Asia and reached the borders of Ethiopia in Africa. He did not expect to find the love of his life in the harem – Alexandra (in Europe known as Roksolana, in Turkey as Hurrem, which means cheerful, joyful), who during the Tatar invasion was kidnapped and sold to the Turks, and then – bought at the slave market – given to the sultan.
