Geordin Hill-Lewis, city mayor and member of the opposition Democratic Alliance, called for the ship to be refused entry. But the government, which abstained from the UN vote condemning the invasion in March, rejected the appeal.
“South Africa has no legal obligation to comply with US and EU sanctions,” said Vincent Magwenya, spokesman for President Cyril Ramaphosa, quoted by Bloomberg. “We have no reason to prevent entry into South Africa,” he added.
“South Africa’s sanctions commitments only apply to those specifically adopted by the United Nations,” said Magwenya.
Earlier, the authorities in Hong Kong, from which the yacht is heading, spoke in a similar vein. Hong Kong chief of administration John Lee said that without UN sanctions there would be no “legal basis” for any movement in relation to the yacht.

Mordashov is described as Putin’s close associate and one of Russia’s richest people. He is on the list of people subject to EU and US sanctions in connection with the Russian attack on Ukraine. In July 2022, his fortune was estimated at $ 32.1 billion. It controls enterprises operating in several different industries: mining, metallurgy, machinery, media and tourism.
“Nord” is the largest and most valuable yacht of Alexei Mordashov. Its total length is 141.63 meters and a width of 22.48 meters. It was built in 2021, and its value is estimated at $ 500 million. (almost PLN 2.5 billion).
