South Korean police chief Yoon Hee-keun said that crowd control in the area where the tragedy occurred she was “inadequate” and that she felt very responsible for the incident, Reuters news agency reported on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol called on Tuesday for safety measures to be taken to prevent accidents to the masses.
“We should develop specific security measures to control the crowd, not only in the streets where this massive disaster happened, but in other places such as stadiums and concert venues where large crowds are gathering,” said Yoon.
The number of victims is increasing
South Korea’s home ministry said on Tuesday that the death toll rose to 156.
The tragedy happened from Saturday to Sunday in the party district of Itaewon, where tens of thousands of people enjoyed Halloween. In a steep, narrow street people trampled each other in panic, many suffocated.
