The “Green Comet” is approaching Earth. Will we be able to see it with the naked eye?

The appearance of a comet in our solar system is always accompanied by the question of whether we will be able to admire it in the night sky. In the case of C/2022E3 – popularly known as the “green comet” – nothing is decided yet. It will be closest to Earth on February 1.

At the beginning of March 2022, comet C/2022E3 was discovered, which is popularly called the “green comet”. It is a comet that is estimated to reach the Sun for the first time in at least 50,000 years. The closest to our star is today on January 12, a closest to Earth will be February 1. Will it be visible to the naked eye?

The comet will be 42 million kilometers away. That’s quite a distance, but if it behaves like many previous great comets, enough gas will be released from its surface when exposed to solar radiation that its head can be several hundred thousand kilometers across, and its tail can be very long.

Then this comet can be a big attraction in our sky. However, let’s remember that comets are very special objects and very “fussy”. Those that were predicted to be very bright were very faint, says astronomer Dr. Leszek Błaszkiewicz from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.
