The opposition CDU and CSU persuaded the coalition of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP in the Bundestag to provide Ukraine with tanks. After nearly an hour of debate, the coalition MPs and the Left wing rejected the motion.
As Johann Wadephul of the CDU argued during the debate, Russia’s war with Ukraine entered a new phase after Vladimir Putin partially mobilized Russian reservists. “This is Russian imperialism that cannot win,” argued Wadephul. He also referred to the Bundestag resolution of April 28, which allowed the delivery of heavy weapons but, according to the opposition, “is not being properly implemented”.
– Such a policy of Germany now causes a deep division in Europe – added the CDU politician.
SPD MPs argued that Germany had so far provided Ukraine with “a lot of weapons”, including Gepard anti-aircraft tanks and self-propelled howitzers, but that Germany’s contribution was “constantly underestimated and criticized”, according to them.
