The Federal Trade Commission is not going to wait until next year. The FTC wants to officially block Microsoft’s deal with Activision Blizzard, so the deal may fail and Call of Duty and other games from the publisher will not be included in Xbox Game Pass.

The Washington Post just confirmed the surprising news – The Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit on Thursday to block Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. According to US officials, such a huge transaction will allow the tech giant to stifle competition in the gaming industry.

FTC thinks Microsoft will want to block games on other platforms we have already seen such a situation in the case of Bethesda, according to officials:

“Microsoft has already shown that it can and will withhold content from its gaming rivals. Today, we’re trying to stop Microsoft from gaining control of a leading independent game studio and using it to harm competition in the many dynamic and fast-growing markets of the gaming industry,” Holly Vedova, director of the FTC’s Office of Competition.

The actions of the Federal Trade Commission to block Activision Blizzard’s transaction with Microsoft is to start a completely new chapter in the history of the technology industry from the United States. Lina Khan has been named as the new head of the FTC, and she is behind “a new era of antitrust enforcement characterized by a willingness to take cases to court rather than seek settlements with companies.”

We can suspect that the “fight” for Call of Duty will continue. Activision’s representatives have already stated that they will fight for the transaction and are ready to go to court so that the merger can be approved as a last resort.
