The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi. The Vatican has launched a new investigation into the disappearance of a 15-year-old girl in 1983
The Vatican judiciary has launched a new investigation into the disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi almost 40 years ago, the Vatican announced, thus confirming media reports. As explained, the launch of the new proceedings is also the result of requests from the family of the missing daughter of a Vatican employee. Many hypotheses have been put forward in the Orlandi case, but no concrete answers have ever been obtained.
15-year-old Emanuela Orlandi disappeared in broad daylight in Rome in June 1983. She never came home after music lessons. Over the course of four decades, many theories have emerged about her fate. None has ever been confirmed. Her body was even searched for in the tomb of the boss of the Roman mafia, buried until recently in the church in the Eternal City.
“Perhaps finally cooperation between the Italian state and the Vatican will be possible”
According to the Ansa agency, the new case was initiated by the promoter of justice, Alessandro Diddi, the prosecutor at the Vatican Tribunal. Investigators are to first review files from previous Orlandi investigations. Pietro Orlandi, the missing woman’s brother, continues to try to find the truth.
On hearing about the new investigation, he told RAI television: “We have been asking for your cooperation for many years to reach a definitive solution to the case. The initiation of proceedings is a very positive thing. Perhaps cooperation between the Italian state and the Vatican will finally be possible, given that a parliamentary inquiry has also been proposed.
Pietro Orlandi admitted that the Vatican’s new interest in the case is also due to a documentary available on one of the popular streaming platforms about his missing sister. He also expressed the opinion that “there are people in the Vatican who know everything” about it.
In turn, the lawyer of the family, Laura Sgro, informed the Guardian journalists that she learned about the new investigation from the media. – A year ago we wrote to the Pope with the intention of talking to the promoter of justice. Of course, we’re happy that they’re investigating, but we really hope that it will bring really concrete answers,’ she said.
The Italian agency Adnkronos was the first to report the reopening of the investigation. Alessandro Diddi confirmed these reports to LaPresse journalists.
“The investigation will also look into the case of Mirella Gregori, who also disappeared in Rome as a 15-year-old in the weeks before Orlandi’s disappearance. It has long been believed that there may be a connection between the two disappearances,” writes the Guardian.

TVN24 “SUPERVIZER” REPORT: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi. The greatest secret of the Vatican
The Orlandi family applied for the resumption of previously discontinued proceedings for the first time in 2017. Among other things, there was a hypothesis that the 15-year-old girl was kidnapped by gangsters from the Roman criminal organization Banda della Magliana as part of financial settlements with the Vatican or even at the behest of the then head of the Vatican bank.
The remains of the young Italian woman were sought in the tomb of one of the gang leaders Enrico De Pedis, buried until recently in a Roman church as his “benefactor”. There was another theory that her body was dumped in a cement mixer.
In 2019, a small German cemetery in the Vatican was searched in connection with a new hypothesis that a teenager was buried there. No bone fragments have been found to indicate it was her remains.
The bones found in the seat of the Apostolic Nunciature in Italyalso unsuccessfully.
