the atom is the future. Koreans were better
According to unofficial information, it was Zygmunt Solorz’s company that became interested in building a nuclear power plant on its premises, after Pątnów was included in the government’s Polish Nuclear Power Program as one of the four possible locations for a large nuclear power plant in Poland. Joining the project controlled by the State Treasury, PGE, was to facilitate talks with Koreans, who attach great importance to the fact that the project has government support.
On the sidelines, however, Solorz avoided the question of who initiated the idea of implementing a nuclear project in such a formula. On the other hand, he answered the question why he started working with a South Korean company, and not with the American Westinghouse or the French EDF, who they also applied for a nuclear contract in Poland.
– The others were worse – said Solorz. – Of course, before that, I thoroughly researched the market of both SMRs and nuclear energy in general – added.
The plans to build a large nuclear power plant mean that ZE PAK will not invest in small SMR reactors. Previously, Solorz’s company cooperated in the development of SMR with companies belonging to another billionaire – Michał Sołowow. However, she broke this cooperation on Monday.
When asked about small nuclear reactors, Solorz replied: – SMRs have not started yet, they are still the future.
ZE PAK together with the Polish Energy Group and the Korean reactor supplier KHNP signed a letter of intent in Seoul on Monday to collaborate to develop a plan for the development of a nuclear power plant based on Korean APR1400 technology. The power plant is to be built in Pątnów (Konin district), where today ZE PAK produces electricity from lignite. ZE PAK wants to shut down the Pątnów Power Plant at the end of 2024. Details of the new nuclear project are not yet known. By the end of the year, the signatories of the letter are to establish the details of cooperation and prepare an investment development plan.
