Scientists have discovered a huge asteroid. The “planet killer” was hiding in the light of the sun

The largest of the asteroids discovered was named “2022 AP7”. The second one is approx. 1 km wide. “Due to their size, we call such objects planetary killer,” wrote the project’s lead researcher astronomer Scott S. Sheppard of the Carnegie Institute of Science in Washington in a statement.

A collision of such an asteroid with the Earth would fill the atmosphere with dust and pollution for years, limiting sunlight and cooling the planet. “It would be a mass extinction on a scale unknown for millions of years,” Sheppard noted.

Although scientists are not able to accurately predict the trajectory asteroids in the distant future, we can rest assured for now. Discoverers assure that it will not come close to Earth for the next few centuries.

Spotting these asteroids was extremely difficult, because their visibility is usually prevented by harsh sunlight. To avoid it, astronomers conduct their observations in the short period of twilight with only about 10 minutes a day, CNN reports.

An international team discovered 2022 AP7 with a 4-meter telescope at an observatory in Chile.
