Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke in the afternoon on the phone with the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, said spokesman for the federal government Steffen Hebestreit. The 90-minute conversation was devoted to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and its consequences. Scholz called for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
The chancellor called on Putin to “find a diplomatic solution as soon as possible, based on a ceasefire, the complete withdrawal of Russian troops and respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
He stressed that “All further Russian annexation moves will not remain unanswered and will under no circumstances be recognized.”
The chancellor also called on the president of Russia to treat prisoners of war in accordance with international law and to grant the Red Cross unrestricted access – informed the spokesman.
Referring to the situation in the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, Scholz emphasized the need to ensure the safety of this plant. “He called for any escalation to be avoided and for immediate implement the measures recommended in the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency“- handed over.
Scholz and Putin also discussed the global food situation, which is particularly tense following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
