With calls for an “immediate” referendum on joining Russia, the so-called The “social chambers” of these separatist creations, maintained by Moscow, appeared on Monday in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. The propaganda videos posted on social media show that separatist and pro-referendum movements also appear in the Zaporizhia and Kherson oblasts, partially occupied by Putin’s troops.

Separatists want to use the so-called Crimean model. In 2014, a similar pseudo-referendum was held in Crimea, whose inhabitants allegedly voted for inclusion in the Russian Federation.

Russian propagandist Margarita Simonian, head of the Kremlin TV RT, suggested that this would be a repetition of the “Crimean scenario”, and by recognizing the occupied territories as its territory, Russia could more easily threaten NATO with a response to Ukrainian attacks. This, Simonian argues, “would loosen Russia’s hands in all respects.” This is an apparently veiled threat involving the use of nuclear weapons. This statement harmonizes perfectly with the words of Putin, who in his appeal to the nation said:

“The West’s goal is to weaken, divide and destroy Russia,” said the Russian president.

After the referenda, the attack on the occupied territories will become an attack on Russia with all its consequences, announced the vice-chairman of the Federation Council, Konstantin Kosachev.

“The Russians can do what they want. This will not change anything” – replied the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba on Tuesday in New York, when asked before the meeting with the US ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield about the referendum on the annexation of the occupied Ukrainian territories to Russia – informed the agency Reuters.

Kułeba referred in this way to the plans announced on Tuesday by the self-proclaimed republics of the Lugansk and Donetsk republics to conduct pseudo-referenda on September 23-27, aimed at including these territories occupied by Russia into the Russian Federation.

On the website of the ministry, headed by Kuleba, an unequivocal position appeared: “Ukraine is closely following the plans of the Russian Federation to hold so-called” referenda “in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. (…) They will have no legal consequences and will not have any impact or on the administrative and territorial integrity of Ukraine, or on the recognition of its borders by the international community. “

“The persons who will organize the pseudo-referendum will be the objects of criminal proceedings; the competent Ukrainian authorities will take appropriate measures to find them and bring them to justice” – emphasized the ministry.

– From the point of view of democracy, the so-called referenda organized by Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine are a mockery; Poland will not recognize their results, because they are worth nothing and are decided in the Kremlin, not by voting – President Andrzej Duda said on Tuesday during his visit to New York. During a meeting with media representatives, Duda was asked about his position on the pseudo-referenda announced by the authorities of the self-proclaimed so-called People’s republics established by pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts in eastern Ukraine.

The president pointed out that Poles – especially the elderly and those who know the history of their country – do not need to be told “what is worth the referenda organized by Russia in the territories it occupies”.

– They’re worth nothing. The truth is that the result is decided in the Kremlin, not by vote. And what vote is cast by those who participate in the referendum at all does not really matter here. And the result will be what they plan in the Kremlin – emphasized the Polish president.

The fictitious referenda planned by Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine would be ridiculous if they were not tragic, said French President Emmanuel Macron in New York on Tuesday. The French president called them a “parody” and said they would have no legal consequences. He added that organizing fictitious votes in the territories he bombed was cynical and an additional provocation.

“If the idea of a referendum in Donbas were not so tragic, it would be ridiculous,” he assessed.
