Premier League: Controversy with a card for Kieran Trippier

The referee’s controversy arose in the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Manchester City.

On the 74th minute, Kieran Trippier fouled Kevin De Bruyne. Newcastle United right-back stopped a Manchester City counterattack. The Englishman attacked the Belgian at knee level and the referee at St. James’ Park Jarred Gillet had no doubts showing him the red card.

The situation was however scrutinized by the VAR system and Gillet retracted his decision, giving Trippier only a yellow card. Thus, the side defender could remain on the pitch. The change of the verdict by the arbitrator caused quite a stir among the fans. Opinions are divided.

MC took the lead very quickly today thanks to a hit by İlkay Gündoğan. Newcastle responded with goals from Miguel Almirón, Callum Wilson and Trippier who tried the free-kick beautifully. City players then scored two more goals, namely Erling Braut Haaland and Bernardo Silva. The game ended in a 3-3 draw.
