An unusual situation took place during the traditional prayer in front of the statue of the Immaculata in the Spanish Square. On Thursday, Italians celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, which is a national holiday for them.

“Immaculate Virgin, today I would like to offer you the thanks of the Ukrainian people for peace,” he said in a hollow voice, tears flowing from his eyes.

When he was able to, he continued: “Instead, once again I must bring you the pleas of children, elderly people, fathers and mothers, young people of this martyred land that suffers so much.” The crowd gathered in prayer expressed approval of the pope’s reaction.

“I ask you to spiritually join me in this gesture of filial devotion to our Mother, to whose intercession we entrust the universal desire for peace, especially for the afflicted Ukraine, which suffers greatly,” the Pope said earlier during the Angelus prayer.

— I think of the words of the Angel to the Virgin: nothing is impossible for God. With God’s help, peace is possible, disarmament is possible, but God wants our good will, he added.

May Our Lady help us to convert to God’s plan.

After a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Francis went to the Spanish Square. In 2020 and 2021, he prayed alone in front of the statue of Our Lady in the darkness, before dawn, which was one of the most evocative moments of the then anti-pandemic restrictions.
