The 12 ordered Flirts are part of the largest investment program in the history of the company “PKP Intercity – Kolej Duży Inwestycji”. They are produced in the Stadler Polska factory in Siedlce. The tender for the delivery of new trains was announced in 2017, and the contract was signed in 2019. Now the carrier is collecting the first two of the 12 trains ordered.
“We are glad that new modern vehicles strengthen the rolling stock of PKP Intercity. Initial plans assume that the newest Flirt vehicles will run throughout Poland, incl. from Gdynia via Łódź to Kraków. Therefore, many inhabitants of cities located on the above routes will be able to use them “- indicated the president of PKP Intercity Marek Chraniek.
The carrier explained that Flirty will complement the Intercity offer on the following lines: Szczecin – Poznań – Łódź – Lublin; Szczecin – Poznań – Łódź – Kraków; Gdynia – Bydgoszcz – Łódź – Kraków; Gdynia – Bydgoszcz – Łódź – Katowice; Olsztyn – Warsaw – Krakow; Olsztyn / Białystok – Warsaw – Częstochowa – Bielsko Biała / Racibórz.
The new Flirty features include air conditioning, electric sockets, GSM / LTE signal amplifiers, wireless internet, dedicated places for bicycles, as well as a catering area. They are also adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. The new squads have 294 2nd class seats and 60 1st class seats.
PKP Intercity informed that the first new Flirty delivered will start to carry passengers in the coming weeks, and the last units are to be picked up in the third quarter of 2023. The value of the entire contract is PLN 1.015 billion gross. The manufacturer will also be responsible for the technical maintenance of the new fleet for 15 years.
