Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov continues Russian propaganda on the war in Ukraine. In a meeting with journalists, he stated that the attack on Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine would be understood as an attack on Russia itself.
During the press conference, Peskov referred to the latest events during the war in Ukraine. Ukraine has not shown any willingness to negotiate. The objectives of the special military operation remain unchanged – said a spokesman for the president of Russia.
When asked whether Russia would consider attacks on “new territories” as an act of aggression against the country or something else, he replied: No, it won’t be anything else.
Peskov was unable to answer the question within what limits the “annexed” territories were recognized. The Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics were recognized by Russia within the 2014 borders. As for the territories of the Kherson and Zaporizhia Oblasts, we need to discuss this. We will explain everything today – He said.
The Donetsk region is not fully controlled by Russian forces. Some are still in the hands of the Ukrainian army. “De jure” we believe that the part of the Donetsk People’s Republic that is not controlled by the Russian army is part of Russia Peskov said.
The pro-Russian occupation authorities in the four oblasts in eastern and southern Ukraine, partially occupied by Russian troops, claimed that they held “referenda” between Friday and Tuesday on joining these areas to Russia. These activities were carried out by the Russian army and the occupation administration in the territories of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia oblasts. According to the British Ministry of Defense, Russian President Vladimir Putin may announce the annexation of the occupied territories as early as next Friday.
After the pseudo-referenda in eastern Ukraine, the pro-Russian occupation authorities applied to Vladimir Putin to annex the territories. As Peskov said earlier, a ceremony will take place on Friday during which Vladimir Putin will sign these documents. The ceremony will start at 14 Polish time.
The Russian media indicate that, in accordance with Russian regulations, the annexation must be followed in line with it with certain procedures. First, Russia must recognize the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions as independent states. This point – as Reuters reports – has already been met.
Second, agreements with the oblasts must be approved by the Constitutional Court and approved by parliament.
Parliamentarians have so far reported that no extraordinary sessions of the State Duma or the Federation Council are planned. The actual meetings are scheduled for October 3 and 4, and it is likely then that both houses will deal with the annexation.
