343 candidates were nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, including 251 people and 92 organizations. This is the second largest number of nominations in history. Only in 2016, there were more applicants when 376 applications were approved.
Winner selection process
Nobel Peace Prize nominations can be submitted by January 31st each year. The nominations are then handed over to the Nobel Committee in mid-February. The committee reviews the appointments and prepares a shortlist for further examination. Later, permanent advisers to the Committee and experts – z Norway or international – they report on the candidates. The committee meets regularly from mid-February to September to discuss and continuously narrow the field of candidates. The laureate is announced on the first Friday of October.

“As a rule, the Committee takes a decision only at its last meeting, before announcing the winner (s) of a given year at the beginning of October,” we read on the website of the Nobel Committee. “The Committee seeks consensus in selecting a Nobel Peace Prize winner. In the rare event that this is not possible, a decision is taken by a simple majority.”
