Analyzes of two dried blood samples provided by the competitor on July 8 and 13 during the Tour de France 2022 revealed the presence of tramadol and its two major metabolites.
Thus, UCI announced that Colombian cyclist Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas was fined for violating the ban on the use of tramadol in competition, as laid down in the UCI Medical Regulations, to protect the safety and health of cyclists in the light of the side effects of the substance.
According to UCI medical regulations, the rider is disqualified from the Tour de France 2022. This decision may be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) within the next 10 days.
Violation of the ban on the use of tramadol during the competition is an offense under the UCI Medical Regulations. However, they are not a flagrant anti-doping rule violation. As this is the first offense, Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas will not receive a period of Ineligibility from the professional peloton and will therefore be allowed to continue competing. In just 2 days we will see him at the start of La Vuelta ciclista a España.
