In 2020, Swiatlana Cichanouska ran for the presidency of Belarus. However, the elections were rigged and he took power Alexander Lukashenkoby starting a brutal fight against the opposition, supported by the Kremlin. As a result, Cichanouska was forced to flee Belarus and now lives in exile, being a widely recognized opposition leader.

This month she attended several meetings with EU leaders in Brussels. – These ‘legal actions’ are outrageous – said POLITICO spokesman for Cichanouska. – First they imprisoned her husband, then forced her to leave the country. Now they accuse her of completely absurd crimes.

In December 2021 a Belarusian court sentenced Cichanouska’s husband, Sergei, to 18 years in a penal colony for inciting hatred and social unrest. The blogger was arrested in May 2020, when he was preparing to run in the presidential election against Lukashenka – and it was after his arrest that Cichanouska took part in the elections.

– It is certainly a personal revenge, but at the same time a recognition of her strength. The regime – and Lukashenka personally – are terrified that this woman will come back and kick their ass, said a spokesman for Cichanouska.
