In India, the bridge has collapsed. Terrifying video from the moment of the tragedy
The suspension bridge over the Machhu River was 233 meters long. It was built in 1880 from materials brought from England. It is now a popular tourist attraction. NDTV said it had recently reopened to the public after a six-month refurbishment, but without a safety certificate from the authorities.
According to local media reports, at the time of the disaster there were more people on the bridge than it was capable of. “The Times of India” reported that there were about 400 people at the crossing, according to NDTV – even about 500.
The recording of the tragedy is circulating around social media. You can see the structure swaying. At some point, the ropes on one side of the crossing break, and the people standing on it fall into the water. This material can be seen at this link.
The death toll from the collapse of the suspension bridge over the Machhu River in the city of Morbi has risen to 134. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for “urgent mobilization of rescue teams” and assistance to all victims.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, referring to the disaster, wrote on Twitter on Monday that he was “deeply shaken by the tragedy in the state of Gujarat”. “On behalf of the Polish government, I extend my sincerest condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We mourn the victims, we are in pain with their families and all the people of India,” stressed the head of the government.
