“Are dentists also so expensive in your cities?” – Paweł from Krakow asks on one of the Facebook groups. Some time ago his tooth started to ache. He called the dentist and surprise – the waiting time for the visit was one month.
I declined and called two more offices. And the same. I was shocked because it was a private visit. At the NFZ I understand queues, but privately? So I registered with the first dentist I called, hoping that the tooth would not start to hurt more during this time – he says.
He survived until the visit, but during it he experienced another surprise. – It turned out that the tooth needed to be treated with a root canal. The cost of 1.2 thousand. zloty. I thought that I would fall off the chair – he says.
Karolina, in turn, went to the dentist for a checkup. It was less than 500 zlotys. – Apparently I had a cavity, plus the removal of scale and that’s all it came out. It’s good that you could pay by card, because I was prepared for a maximum of PLN 200 – he says.

A market dominated by the private sector
Prices at dentists depend primarily on the location of the office. In large cities, it is even several times more expensive than in the outskirts. The quota range is considerable. The inspection itself costs from 100 to 150 PLN. Tartar removal costs from 200 to 300 zlotys, root canal treatment – from 600 zlotys to even 1.2 thousand zlotys. PLN for a tooth. Removal of a permanent tooth is an expense of PLN 200-400, insertion of a seal PLN 200-300.
The latest PMR report “Dental services market in Poland 2021. Market analysis and development forecasts for 2021-2026” shows that The value of the dental services market in Poland in the public and private segment in 2020 amounted to PLN 8.6 billion.

– The dental market is traditionally dominated by the private sector and Poles have for years been used to having to spend money out of their own pockets for this purpose. It is connected with very poor state financing of this type of services. There is also no possibility of additional payments, e.g. for better material. Due to poor valuations in the public sector, not only patients give up treatment under the National Health Fund, but also other dentists who do not pay to participate in this system. The number of facilities with a NFZ contract is decreasing from year to year. In short, Poles have no choice but to treat themselves privately – says Monika Stefańczyk, Pharma and Healthcare Business Unit Director at PMR.
Double-digit growth
As he adds, the private spending on dental services is a driving force behind the growth of the dental and dental services market it is growing at a much faster pace than public funding in this regard.
– When it comes to spending per capita, compared to other European countries, it turns out that Poles’ spending on dental treatment is not high. It is also worth noting that we are dealing with inflation in the entire economy: the prices of raw materials and energy are rising, and the inflation of wages in the medical sector is also significantly high, which affects the increase in the prices of dental services – notes Monika Stefańczyk.
PMR forecasts a double-digit increase in the value of the dental services market from 2022 to 2026 in the private segment. This growth is most influenced by inflation, health debt incurred during a pandemic (failure to treat and prevent treatment), as well as the development of private companies, the high quality of their services and technological novelties introduced by them, which significantly differentiate their offer from those offered in public segment.
The market is in bloom
Dentistry has been developing dynamically in recent years. – In the past, we used to treat our teeth at one dentist, today we have about 10 specializations such as periodontist, implantologist or pediatrician. Technology gives us great opportunities in the field of diagnostics, not only X-ray, but also tomography or 3D intraoral scanners – says Marta Halska, director of the Marketing and Communication Department, Medicover Dentistry.
And he gives an example. – When deciding, for example, on endodontics, popularly known as root canal treatment, it is best to go to an endodontic specialist who will heal the tooth under a microscope, preceded by detailed imaging diagnostics performed on the spot and using painless computer anesthesia – he points out.
– This is just one example of how many changes have taken place in this area. Today we have a choice, we can treat ourselves as we used to, but we can also use the latest knowledge, technology and materials, and these cost money – notes Marta Halska.
