How many Russians entered the EU last week? Frontex provides the data

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency provided information on the crossing of the EU’s land borders by Russians. They show that more than 1.3 million Russian citizens have entered the EU since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Last week, the number of Russians entering the EU increased by 30 percent.

From 19 to 25 September, 66,000 Russians came to the EU via land borders. Compared to the previous week, this is an increase of 30 percent. It is not hard to guess that the increase in traffic was influenced by the mobilization announcement by Vladimir Putin.

Most of the Russian citizens have crossed the EU border in Finland and Estonia. In just the last four days, 30,000 Russians have come to Finland.

Frontex reports that most of the people crossing the border have visas issued by EU countries or associated countries of the Schengen area.

The EU agency expects that if Russia closes the borders to men subject to mobilization, there will be more and more illegal border crossings.

On September 19, Poland introduced new restrictions for Russians who want to enter our country. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia made similar moves. Finland is also considering the tightening of entry options for Russians.

Frontex said in a communication that an increasing number of Russian citizens is expected in the near future due to the mobilization at the external borders of the EU. “In the longer term, we can observe an increase in illegal border crossing at the EU’s external borders with Russia and Ukraine, as well as an increase in the illegal stay in the EU of Russian citizens already residing in the Member States,” the agency said.
