Great Britain. Prof. Clarke: last moment to hand over tanks to Ukraine before Russia’s offensive

British military expert Prof. Michael Clarke warns that the decision to transfer tanks to Ukraine must be made as soon as possible, otherwise Ukrainian soldiers will not have time to learn how to use them before the expected Russian offensive.

Last weekend Great Britain announced she would deliver Ukraine 14 Challenger 2 tanks, thus becoming the first country to offer Western-made tanks. Other countries are expected to make similar declarations at Friday’s meeting at the US Ramstein base.

Prof. Michael Clarke, former director of the London-based Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) think tank, told Sky News that a meeting of Ukraine’s allies could send up to 100 tanks to the country, but stressed that time was of the essence.

As he explained, the standard tank crew training lasts about 20 weeks, and although in the current situation it can be condensed to 10-12 weeks, it still means that if the Ukrainians are to be able to complete even this shortened training before the start of the expected new offensive RussiaFriday is practically the last chance to make a decision.

Clarke: Western tanks can make a difference

He also assessed that Western tanks are an element that can make a real difference to the outcome of the war, because British Challengers are “infinitely better” than all types of tanks at the disposal of the Russian army.

He pointed out that contrary to the Kremlin’s claims that they would “burn like the rest”, the Challenger tank, even if hit by a Russian tank, might not suffer any damage.
