Georgia Holt, Cher’s mother, has died. She was a singer and actress
Three months ago, Cher tweeted that her mother, Georgia Holt, had been hospitalized with pneumonia. Unfortunately, on Sunday evening it turned out that Holt died at the age of 96. “Mom has passed away,” Cher wrote. She expressed her condolences to the singer Hillary Clinton.
Cher, now 76, has long spoken in the media about the strong bond she had with her mother. The singer mentioned in one of the interviews that Holt’s appearance was a constant inspiration for her from the earliest years. Cher said her mother and her friends in the 1950s were “so beautiful” that “everyone held their breath” when they walked into the room.
In 2013, fans of the star were able to learn more about Cher and Holt’s life together thanks to the Lifetime documentary “Dear Mom, Love Cher”. The film features interviews with Holt, Cher and her sister Georganne LaPiere, and Cher’s sons Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman.
This video was initiated by Cher, who felt she wanted to portray her mother as an independent artist – especially after Holt found tapes of her own never-released album for which she had recorded sessions in 1980. As a gift for her 86th birthday, Cher commissioned remastering the tapes and releasing them. You can listen to Georgia Holt’s songs on YouTube. It is surprising how the mother’s vocal resembles the one we know from Cher’s albums.
Holt was born Jackie Jean Crouch in rural Arkansas. Wanting to develop her singing talent, she moved to Hollywood. She was briefly married to Cher’s father, John Sarkisian. Later, as a single mother, she struggled financially. Under pressure, she gave Cher into the care of an orphanage; she visited her daily and was pressured to hand over the girl to another family. However, that did not happen – Holt got back on her feet and managed to land several roles in Hollywood, including in the popular series “I Love Lucy”.
