Duda beats in von der Leyen: How much contempt you must have …

On the weekend we Italy were held early elections parliamentary, announced after the technical collapse of Mario Draghi’s government in July. As shown by the partial results, they were won by a block consisting of a party Fratelli d’Italia under the command Giorgia Meloni (approx. 24-25% of votes), Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini’s League (approx. 8-9% of votes each). 15-16 percent votes were won by the centrist-populist Giuseppe Conte’s 5-Star Movement, and about 21-22 percent. a center-left block led by the Democratic Party led by Enrico Letty.

Von der Leyen’s words and Duda’s reaction

On Thursday, the head of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen during a debate at Princeton University, she was asked about parliamentary elections in Italy, incl. in the context of the fact that – as noted – among the candidates are politicians “close” to Vladimir Putin. We will see the vote in Italy. There were also elections in Sweden. If things go in a difficult direction, we have the tools, as in the case of Poland and Hungary – replied the head of the European Commission, quoted by the Ansa agency. She also added: My approach is that we work with any democratic government ready to work with us.

Ursula Von der Leyen’s statements were made on social media on Monday President Andrzej Duda. “How much superiority, shoes, arrogance and contempt for democratic rules must be in oneself to say about the result of elections made by another nation in another country: The wrong one won! They chose wrong! We have to catch this country and these authorities!?” – he wrote.

The first woman to head the Italian government

Meloni is likely to become the first female head of the Italian government. Its right-wing groups Italian brothers was the only large parliamentary grouping in opposition to the Government of National Accord, appointed by Mario Draghi.

During campaignin an interview with Reuters, Meloni stated that she wanted to defend national interests, change Rome’s position towards The European Commission. But this does not mean that we want to destroy the Union, that we want to get out of it, that we want to do something crazy she explained.

The leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, who spoke out against the sanctions against Russia, will probably also join the new Italian government.

At the end of August, during a debate at the congress of the Catholic Communion and Liberation movement in Rimini, Salvini said: Russia’s trade surplus is $ 70 billion. For the first time in history, (a country) subject to sanctions earns money. Please, evaluate the usefulness of this tool. If it works well, let’s keep it going, but if the opposite is true, there is a risk that it will last 10 years. A tool that was supposed to discourage Putin from attacking favors his economy.

This position was opposed by the League’s allies – both the Italian Brothers and Forza Italia. Giorgia Meloni ruled out the possibility of a revision of the position on the sanctions. As she said, Italy’s credibility in the international arena may be jeopardized as a result. She assessed that “sanctions are the most effective tool at this stage”.
