Corruption in the EU. The Belgian court has decided on Eva Kaila. Lawyers: “She feels that her partner has failed her”

A Belgian judge ruled on Thursday that former deputy head of the European Parliament Eva Kaili will remain in custody for another month as part of an ongoing investigation into corruption allegations, Belgian prosecutors reported.

Kaili, who was dismissed as EP vice-president in early December, can appeal the decision within 24 hours. The Greek claims she is innocent.

Lawyers sought to place the former deputy head of the European Parliament under electronic surveillance.

Yesterday, Eva Kaili’s lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, who had a meeting with the Greek politician for several hours, stated that “there are many arguments for releasing her from custody.” “She is not suspected of absconding and cannot tamper with evidence,” the lawyer said.

Dimitrakopoulos reported that Kaili “feels let down by her partner”. Francesco Giorgi, the private partner of the Greek woman, is one of the people detained and arrested in connection with the corruption scandal in the EU. During interrogations, he was to give the names of other people allegedly involved in this illegal practice.

According to Politico, Kaili is to base her defense on the claim that when she found out about the cash held by Giorgi, she “tried to put it back where it belongs” and told her father to “hide the money”.

The MEP is awaiting the results of two investigations, in Belgium and Greece. In her home country, she faces up to 15 years in prison.

If Kaili is found guilty in Greece, the sentence handed down by the national judicial authorities will be more severe than in Belgium, where the sentences for the crimes she is accused of are less severe, ranging from three to five years in prison.

In Greece, Kaili is, among others, under the scrutiny of the money laundering office. The investigation conducted in her case is to determine whether she imported undeclared funds from abroad and invested them in Greece, mainly in real estate.

The former deputy head of the European Parliament was indicted and arrested by a Belgian court decision. Kaila and three others are charged with corruption, participation in a criminal group and money laundering.

The European Parliament dismissed Kaili as Vice-President and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) called on the EP to lift her immunity. Earlier, the Greek authorities froze the assets of the MEP and her immediate family.
