Former King Constantine II of Greece died on Tuesday in Athens at the age of 82. In his last public appearance in central Athens last year, he was seen in a wheelchair, accompanied by his sister, former Queen Sofia of Spain, and other family members.
Following a stroke and severe pneumonia, the former monarch’s health has deteriorated in recent weeks. According to information from government circles, the former king is to be buried on the grounds of his family’s former summer palace in northern Athens.
Former king, godfather to Prince William
Constantine II ascended the throne in 1964 after the death of King Paul’s father. His reign was marked by political instability, ending with a military coup on April 21, 1967. A few months later, he was forced to flee the country after a failed attempt to oppose the then military junta.
He remained in exile in Rome until the monarchy was abolished by the junta in 1973. After the fall of the dictatorship in 1974, the national unity government led by Konstantinos Karamanlis ordered a referendum in which the Greeks rejected the monarchy.
Constantine II was the godfather of the British heir to the throne, Prince William. The former king and his family lived in London for years before returning to Greece.
