Coal is still imported, although we already have an abundance of it. Climate Minister explains
– From the beginning of the year to the end of September, a total of approximately 11.3 million tonnes of hard coal were imported, including over 8.6 million tonnes of thermal coal. In October, about 2 million tons of thermal coal were imported, and this is the plan for the next months of this and the next year. We buy coal mainly from Colombia, South Africa, Australia and Indonesia. We transport it by ships directly to Polish ports and, additionally, by rail from the port in Amsterdam, Minister Moscow informed in an interview with the weekly.
When asked how large the domestic coal production is, she replied that “fortunately still dominant“. Two-thirds of the coal going to households comes from domestic extraction, one-third from abroad,” she specified.

According to the minister, “domestic extraction this year to November amounted to over 30 million tons and is directed to end users, both individual and farmers, as well as industrial, heating and energy entities”. – We have greatly improved the quick process of transferring domestic coal to the energy sector, as well as to heating plants and households – she emphasized.
“Gość Niedzielny” also asked if we are increasing coal mining. Anna Moskwa replied that “there are places where this will not be possible, because, for example, a raw material is running out”. – But where we are able to do it, we plan to increase production – she added.
Coal in retreat
The Minister of Climate and Environment was also asked about the plans to build three nuclear power plants in Poland and the target energy structure related to them in terms of the sources of its production.
– As more reactors are opened, this mix will change, the atom will gradually displace gas and carbon. At the base, we must have stable, working, safe energy sources – it will be nuclear, gas, coal at the moment – she emphasized. As she added, “we also hope that this basis will also include energy from MMR and SMR, that is, from the technology of small reactors.”
