China, Shanghai. Disneyland closed due to epidemic restrictions. Hundreds of people were locked inside

Shanghai Disney Resort had to re-close its gates, preventing hundreds of visitors from leaving. During the COVID-19 pandemic, China continues to maintain its so-called “zero covid” tactic of complete elimination of the virus.

As reported by the BBC, visitors were told at a Disney facility in the Pudong District of Shanghai that they would not be allowed to leave until their tests on COVID-19 show no negative result. Decisions came after 10 new cases of infection were reported in the city last Saturday.

“China’s controversial ‘zero covid’ policy has already led to the lockdown of millions of people, sometimes in unusual places,” recalled the BBC. “However, those who are waiting to leave Shanghai Disney Resort can cheer up on one positive element: attractions in The Happiest Place on Earth (as Disneylands are called) still work,” he added.

Shanghai officials – which posted a statement on the WeChat social network – said the park was denied entry, and people inside could only leave after testing negative for coronavirus. It has been added that anyone who has visited the park since last Thursday must submit three negative test results within three consecutive days.

No date was given for the park to reopen. Shanghai Disney Resort management has assured that purchased tickets will be valid for another six months or will be refunded.

Not the first time

The lockdown at the amusement park came just two days after the venue had reduced visitors to accommodate epidemic demands.

This is not the first time that the Shanghai Disney Resort has had to close. In November 2021, 30,000 people were trapped inside after authorities ordered that everyone be tested as part of the process to identify those who might have come into contact with an infected person.

It’s been almost three years since China confirmed the first cases of coronavirus infections, but authorities are still taking exceptional measures to limit – even the slightest – transmission of the virus.
