During our meeting, we discussed the key issues for deepening our partnership: respect for democracy and human rights, and respect for the individual.
Tsai Ing-wen, President of Taiwan: The presence of the announcer in Taiwan serves to increase public confidence in our democracy, which is the cornerstone of our partnership with the United States.
Hua Chunying, spokeswoman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs: We have repeatedly made it clear to the Americans that we are concerned and opposed to the announcer’s visit to Taiwan. Apparently, the US and the separatist forces in Taiwan were not listening.
Narrator: Such a high-ranking representative of the United States has not visited Taiwan in 25 years.
