The castle was in the hands of many families until 1650, when it was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell during England’s invasion of Scotland.

It remained in ruins for over 300 years, until 1998. It was then that the Simpson family, to which the castle belonged since the 1850s, commissioned the renovation of the building to its original state.
