Biedronka in 1999. A magazine with prices from those years. You won’t believe how they compare to today’s prices. Shocking!
Cigarettes for PLN 2.19, a can of dog food – PLN 1.99, and Haribo bears for PLN 2.79. At a time when inflation and constant increases are draining our pockets, these prices sound like a science fiction novel and are an unattainable dream of every customer. A dream? Yes. Fantasy – not necessarily. We paid that much for these products in 1999. See the Biedronka newsletter from 1999.
Probably many of us today reach for new products from store shelves with horror. A can of pate costs over PLN 3, a package of pasta is PLN 3-4, and a packet of coffee – a dozen or so. For a few products in the basket, you have to pay several dozen zlotys at the checkout. Therefore, with tenderness and longing, we read the Biedronka magazine from 1999.
Let’s add a few selected products to the basket:
- can of dog food
- a pack of coffee
- a pack of jelly beans
- pack of cigarettes
- can of pate
- candy bar
- a pack of disposable diapers
Don’t overlook it
According to the prices in the newspaper, in 1999 we would have paid about PLN 40 for this set of products. Currently, an expense of PLN 90-100 is to be expected. Price increases over the years have hit lovers of stimulants the hardest. In 1999, a packet of coffee cost PLN 4.29, today you have to spend a dozen or so zlotys. And we’re not talking about specialty coffee. The difference in cigarette prices is even greater: from PLN 2.19 to PLN 17-18. However, you can do without stimulants, not without diapers for babies. In 1999, a package of diapers cost less than PLN 24, and currently – over PLN 40.
