According to the Defense Ministry of Armenia, the Azerbaijani army fired on border settlements in the south-east of the country during the night. The attacks were aimed at both military and civilian targets. They are killed and wounded after the gunfire.
The scale and nature of the attacks were unprecedented before, believes Arkadiusz Legięć, analyst for the Caucasus and Central Asia at the Polish Institute of International Affairs. The expert emphasizes that the targets were not on the disputed territory Nagorno-Karabakh.
Azerbaijan claims that the cause of the fighting was a large-scale sabotage attempt by Armenia. The saboteurs were to mine the supply lines of the Azerbaijani army. It defines an invasion statement as “absurd.”
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called for Russian President Vladimir Putin to act and described Azerbaijan’s behavior as unacceptable. Earlier, he spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
According to the treaty establishing the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), an attack on Armenia is equated with an attack on its other participants: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
