Antony Blinken on the mass grave in liberated Izium

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, referring to the reports on the mass grave discovered in Izium, liberated from the Russians, said that this shows what is left behind by Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine. US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said “the reports of the Izium mass grave were appalling.”

– This is a terrifying part of an ongoing story. Wherever we see the outflow of Russian forces from the occupied territories, we see what they leave behind. And the discovery of these 440 tombs in Izium is a reminder of that, Antony Blinken said during a press conference following a meeting with his Jordanian counterpart.

As the head of US diplomacy pointed out, it is important to document “what is likely to be (recognized) as war crimes”.

“Whether it’s through the Ukrainian processes themselves, or the mechanisms of the OSCE, the UN, the International Criminal Court, or all of them together, it is very important to ensure that those who perpetrated these atrocities are accounted for,” added Blinken.

At the same time, the secretary of state reiterated his opposition to the recognition of Russia as a state supporting terrorism, pointing to the undesirable negative consequences that this decision could entail. He added that he was in talks with Congress to impose additional sanctions on Russia, analogous to those provided for the countries sponsoring terrorism.

During the occupation and after liberation

Ukrainian authorities announced the discovery on Friday 450 graves in a collective burial place near Izium. The city, located in the Kharkiv region and with a population of around 50,000 before the war, was under Russian occupation from April. It was recaptured from the Russians in September. According to the Ukrainian authorities, some of the victims had their hands tied and signs of torture were visible.
