Annalena Baerbock, head of German diplomacy: Germany will not oppose if Poland sends Leopards to Ukraine

Annalena Baerbock, Germany’s foreign minister, said in an interview with French TV LCI that her country would not object if Poland sent German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

When asked what would happen if Poland decided to send its Leopard 2 tanks without Germany’s consent, Baerbock said: – So far, such a question has not been asked to us, but if we were asked, we would not stand in the way.

On Friday, at the US base in Ramstein, a meeting of the contact group for defense support to Ukraine was held. However, it did not bring a solution in the form of Germany’s consent to the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine – which Ukraine had hoped for before the meeting.

Also on Friday, in an interview with the Polish Press Agency, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced that if Germany does not agree to transfer the Leopards to Ukraine, Poland will build a “smaller coalition” of countries ready to transfer some of its modern tanks to its fighting neighbor. – We will not passively watch as Ukraine bleeds out. Ukraine and Europe will win this war – with or without Germany, said the Prime Minister.

– Sending Leopards to Ukraine is a matter of Polish and European raison d’état. We will not let Russia capture Kyiv and then set Europe on fire. The decision to support the Ukrainian army is justified both politically and morally. I hope that the Germans will understand this sooner rather than later, said Mateusz Morawiecki.
