Alec Baldwin to be charged with involuntary manslaughter on the set of ‘Rust’ – prosecutors

Alec Baldwin will be charged with involuntary manslaughter, New Mexico state prosecutors announced Thursday. The allegations are related to the tragedy on the set of the film “Rust”, which occurred in 2021. Halyna Hutchins, 42, was killed and director Joel Souza was injured.

The fact that Alec Baldwin, now 64, will be charged with involuntary manslaughter, prosecutors in the state of New Mexico announced on Thursday, January 19. The announcement added that props maker Hannah Gutierrez Reed will face the same accusation.

“After careful consideration of the evidence under New Mexico law, I have determined that the evidence is sufficient to charge Alec Baldwin and the other members of the film crew. No one is above the law on my watch, and everyone deserves justice,” said Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies. Neither Alec Baldwin nor Hannah Gutierrez Reed has commented on the information provided by the prosecution.

Tragedy on the set of the movie “Rust”

The tragedy on the set of the western “Rust” occurred on October 21, 2021 at the Bonanza Creek Ranch farm in Santa Fe, the capital of the state of New Mexico in the south of the United States. Halyna Hutchins, 42, was then shot with a gun held by actor Alec Baldwin. Director Joel Souza was also injured. After the tragedy, work on the film was suspended.

In April 2022, the New Mexico Occupational Safety and Health Bureau released a report on the tragedy after a six-month investigation. Investigators blamed the film’s producer for “knowingly” breaking gun safety rules that led to the cameraman’s death. Rust Movie Productions LLC was fined $137,000.

Filming on “Rust” was about to resume

Baldwin’s situation was not improved by an FBI report in August, which concluded that the gun he was holding would not have gone off without the trigger being pulled. The actor repeatedly argued that the gun fired spontaneously and he did not touch the trigger. He also said he had no idea the gun was loaded. “Someone put live ammo in the revolver, a bullet that shouldn’t have been there.” Someone is responsible for what happened, and I don’t know who it is, but I know it’s not me,” the 64-year-old actor told ABC in December 2021.

In April 2022, Baldwin’s lawyer announced the end of the investigation conducted by the New Mexico state authorities in connection with the tragedy on the set. State investigators cleared the actor of the charges against him. As CNN reported in October 2022, Alec Baldwin also reached a settlement with the family of the shot operator. Under it, the victim’s husband, Matthew Hutchins, was to become the executive producer of the film. Pictures for him they were scheduled to resume in August 2023. However, the criminal investigation by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office and the local district attorney’s office was still ongoing.
