A Russian agent at the heart of German intelligence. New information about the “mole”
The newspaper, which cites Western officials, reports that Carsten L., who was charged espionage for Russia, had access to “highly sensitive, top-secret information about the war in Ukraine, as well as knowledge of how the US and its allies obtained it.” According to the daily, the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) received information about the activities of a potential “mole” in its midst earlier this year.
The suspected Russian spy was supposed to deal with electronic intelligence, including e.g. information on Ukraine captured by German and allied services, as well as satellite photos. One U.S. official said the case had raised “serious concerns.”
According to Erich Schmidt-Eenboom, an expert quoted by the WSJ, the case may turn out to be the worst case of penetration of German services by Russia since 1961, when a BND officer spying for Moscow exposed the network of one hundred CIA agents.
According to “WSJ”, investigators are currently investigating what information Carsten L. gave to Russia. So far, they have also found no evidence that he received money for his work, so the possibility of blackmail or ideologically motivated espionage is being investigated.
According to German officials and CDU MP Roderich Kiesewetter, the war in Ukraine caused a “paradigm shift” in the German services in relation to the threat from Russia after years of neglect in this matter.
Journal sources claim that in response to the expulsion of hundreds of Russian spies working under diplomatic cover, Russia activated a network of deep-seated agents as well as “informal collaborators” and increased the recruitment of officials, businessmen and representatives of the academic world.
“WSJ” also revealed that in 2020, unknown assailants broke into the homes of several CIA officers, which is suspected to be an attempt to intimidate them by Russia.
